Surf FAQ's

SAN JUAN HILLS SURF TEAM

The Surf Team at San Juan Hills is a highly competitive Varsity Athletic Sport. Students who make the commitment to participate in this unique opportunity will learn the ropes of a successful high school surf program.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

Is Surfing a “CUT” sport?

Yes, this is NOT a “learn to surf” program or “surf lessons”.  Prospective team members must have extensive water knowledge and prior experience in the ocean.  The top 25 athletes make the team each year and there is no “Surf PE” class for those who do not make the team.

Which season is Surf Team?

Surfing is a YEAR-ROUND class in which the team competes during the fall season in the Capistrano Coast League with Tesoro, Aliso Niguel, and Capo Valley.  The contests consist of the following divisions: Boys Shortboard/Longboard and Girls Shortboard/Longboard.  The State Championship is usually held in April down at the Oceanside Harbor Jetties.

What period is Surf Team?

The class meets during first period throughout the entire school year.  (Fall Semester-Surf Team/Spring Semester-Surf Class).  Participating on the surf team/surf class replaces the student's PE class, or for upper classmen it counts as an elective.

Is transportation provided to and from the beach?

Students will be responsible for providing his or her own transportation (carpools are the best way to solve this dilemma until the students can drive themselves).  We conduct practices @ 204 (North Beach) in San Clemente and contests are held at T-Street, 204, Barbwire in SC, and at Salt Creek in Dana Point.  Surf practice is M-W-F from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. Students will need to be back on campus in time for their next class period after practice each day.

When are tryouts?

Tryouts will be held during the first two weeks of school and will consist of 3 Parts:

Part 1

-One Mile Timed Run (on school track)

-15 minute treading water exercise (in school pool)

-200 meter Timed Pool Swim

Part 2

-200 yard Timed Ocean Swim with 100 yard Timed Run

Part 3

-15 minute surfing heat with 5-6 other individual surfers (contest simulation)

***You must send Coach Roberts an email stating your intent to tryout at nrroberts@capousd.org with your NAME/GRADE/DIVISION (Shortboard/Longboard) by Friday, July 8th.  You will receive an email with further instructions before school starts but please be sure to come see Coach Roberts in room H108 on the FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL to sign-up for your tryout time(s).

Is there a summer camp?

No, the best way to prepare for the tryouts is to get as much water time as possible over the summer, and enter as many surf contests you can to gain competitive experience.  Most current team members surf 5 to 6 days a week on their own.

Can you ride a soft-top or foamie?

There is no “soft-top/foamie/funboard/midlength” division.  For the purpose of training as a competitive team, Shortboards are defined as 7 feet or below and Longboards are defined as 9 feet or above.
