Cade Albright Named SoCal Defensive Player of the Week

    Cal-Hi Sports Southern California
    Defensive Player of the Week

    Cade Albright
(San Juan Hills, San Juan Capistrano) Sr.

Southern Orange County is the destination for our defensive award winner where we honor a defensive end who makes the most of his tackles.

Last week, in a 38-0 drubbing of a neighboring Aliso Niguel of Aliso Viejo team that came into the game at 6-0, the 6-foot-5, 215-pound senior was like a one man wrecking crew in getting the Stallions to 5-3 and 2-0 in the Sea View League.

Albright, who has offers from Brigham Young and Utah, had season-highs of nine tackles with seven for loss, four and a half sacks and four quarterback hurries. He also batted down a pass.

Defensive ends don’t usually lead the team in tackles and Cade is only eighth on San Juan Hills in total tackles, but of all the Stallions it is Albright that does the most prancing.

In six games played of his 34 tackles, the 15 for loss leads the team. His 10.5 sacks and 15 hurries are more than double the next leading player. Last but not least Albright is one of six players to recover a fumble and of the Stallions’ three blocked punts he has two. Whew, what a mouthful!

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO – San Juan Hills left no doubts about it being the best football team in the Sea View League this season.

The No. 15 Stallions dominated in all three phases in a 38-0 win against No. 18 Aliso Niguel on Friday at San Juan Hills High.

San Juan Hills (5-3, 2-0) blocked two kicks, had a special teams touchdown, seven sacks and four offensive touchdowns in the victory. It was the first time Aliso Niguel (6-1, 0-1) has been shut out since 2011.

Cade Albright gave the Aliso offensive line fits as he recorded 4 1/2 sacks and a pass deflection.

“He is having a monster senior year,” San Juan Hills coach Robert Frith said. “He’s in the right place to make plays. Any time they drop back, they know they have a dude coming off the edge.”

Junior Joey Holbert made his presence known in all three phases of the game. Hobert scored three touchdowns, including a special teams touchdown, made a field goal, blocked a kick and had 78 yards on seven receptions.

“Joey is electric,” Frith said. “I get the ball in his hands because I am a fan and I like to watch him do his thing.”

On the opening series of the game, Aliso Niguel attempted a 45-yard field goal. Hobert blocked the kick and returned the ball 57 yards to give San Juan Hills a 7-0 lead.

After forcing a three-and-out on defense, the Stallions offense had a six-play, 67-yard scoring drive that was capped by a 2-yard touchdown run by Chase Monarch.

Stallions quarterback Hudson Jones flipped a shovel pass to Hobert for his second touchdown of the game to extend San Juan Hills’ lead to 21-0.

Carson Lewis, who had two interception returns for touchdowns last week, blocked an Aliso punt and on the ensuing play threw an 11-yard touchdown pass to Hobert to put the Stallions ahead 28-0.

Hobert made a 25-yard field goal as time expired in the first half to give San Juan Hills a 31-0 lead.

Monarch rushed for his second touchdown of the game in the second half. He finished with 102 yards on 18 carries.

Aliso Niguel had averaged 39 points per game entering the contest, but it only reached the red zone once Friday. Kyle Robertson completed 9 of 18 passes for 113 yards and Eduardo Mayen rushed for 50 yards on nine carries.

The Wolverines host Dana Hills on Friday, Oct. 12. San Juan Hills has a bye next week before playing Dana Hills on Oct. 19.

San Juan Hills Lets ‘Monsters’ Loose to Score Third Shutout, Dominate Aliso Niguel

    By Capo Dispatch

    On October 5, 2018

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO – It’s barely October, but San Juan Hills coach Rob Frith let his “monsters” loose on Friday night.

The Stallions dominated all three phases of the game as Joey Hobert blocked a field goal, scored on that blocked field goal return and caught two touchdowns and Cade Albright racked up four-and-a-half sacks in San Juan Hills’ win over visiting Aliso Niguel, 38-0, in a Sea View League game at San Juan Hills High School.

Stallions Dominate in League Opener, Shift Focus to Aliso Niguel

Game Overview – Aliso Niguel Wolverines

The Stallions enter the heart of their league season, playing host to an Aliso Niguel team that comes into the Badlands ranked number 17 in Orange County with a 6-0 record.  San Juan Hills has hit their stride in all facets of their game and are now the County’s 14th ranked team and rising, following impressive victories against Tesoro, Great Oak, and Trabuco Hills.

This past week, the Stallions jumped out to a 28-0 first quarter lead and controlled both sides of the line of scrimmage on their way to a 56-10 victory that ensured a successful Homecoming, and improved their record to 4-3.  The Stallions turned to their running game early and often against the Mustangs with outstanding performances from their trio of running backs - Chase Monarch, Austin Hogan, and Stephen Margaretis - who teamed up to account for over two-hundred yards on the ground and five rushing touchdowns.  Not to be outdone, Joey "Mr. Versatile" Hobert added a touchdown on the receiving end of a shuttle pass from Hudson Jones, and another on a 53-yard punt return.  Perhaps feeling the need to keep the scoreboard operator on his toes, the defense contributed for their second pick-six in as many games when Carson Lewis returned the second of his two interceptions 62-yards to find the end zone.  The eight San Juan Hills touchdowns gave Coach Rob Frith a plethora of opportunities to test freshman placekicker Tony Wang, who converted on each and every one of his PAT attempts.

The unbeaten Wolverines will certainly challenge San Juan Hills behind senior quarterback Kyle Robertson, who has thrown for nearly 1,300 yards so far this season, often targeting receiver Caleb Peterson and running back Max Carvalho.  Aliso Niguel has also performed well on the ground with running backs Carvalho and Eduardo Mayen, with QB Robertson an ever-present threat.

This battle between the two top teams in the Sea View League marks Senior Night for the Stallions as they celebrate the accomplishments of their Class of 2019:

Orange County Football Defensive Player of the Week: Carson Lewis, San Juan Hills

    By  | sfryer@scng.com | Orange County Register

    PUBLISHED: October 1, 2018 at 3:28 pm | UPDATED: October 1, 2018 at 3:28 pm

The Register’s Orange County Football Defensive Player of the Week:

    Name: Carson Lewis

    School: San Juan Hills

    Year: Senior

Noteworthy: He had two interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown, in the Stallions’ 56-10 win over Trabuco Hills. Lewis (6-3, 172), a senior defensive back, also had six tackles, a fumble recovery and a pass deflection. He has a team-high four interceptions with 41 tackles this season. San Juan Hills coach Robert Frith said Lewis, who has a 4.0 grade-point average, plays with smarts and instincts. “What makes him so special,” Frith said, “is his ability to read the quarterback and have a sense for where the football is going to be. With his experience, his intelligence and his dedication in the film room Carson is a very special player.” Lewis was All-South Coast League second team last season.

Game Overview – Trabuco Hills Mustangs

The Stallions will return to the Badlands on Friday, September 28th for their Homecoming game against Trabuco Hills, their first league opponent of the season.  San Juan Hills comes into the game on a positive run – ranked number 15 and rising in Orange County – having settled into an offensive rhythm with sophomore quarterback Hudson Jones, who helped to pilot the Stallions to a hard-fought 7-6 victory over cross-town rival Tesoro, followed by a 24-0 conquest over Great Oak.  The Stallions continue to dazzle spectators behind junior all-around threat Joey Hobert, who was coined by the Orange County Register as the “Swiss Army Knife.”  Added punch from the offensive backfield comes courtesy of senior running back Chase Monarch, who leads the Stallions in rushing with 406 yards.  Defensively, SJH has welcomed the return of defensive end Cade Albright, who was ranked as the number 1 defensive lineman in Orange County through the first three games of the season.  The accolades for Albright highlight a defensive squad that has proven themselves to be amongst the toughest in the county with continued strong play from Case Ostrom, Darius Jackson, Carson Lewis, and Tyler Wegis.

While the Trabuco Hills squad has struggled a bit, going 1-5 through the first 6 weeks of the season, they remain a dangerous threat behind their senior quarterback Sammy Murphy, senior running back JC Montgomery, and senior linebacker Andrew Gonneville.

With the Stallions offense finding their stride, look for their defense and special teams to continue to showcase their strength and talent.

San Juan Hills gets physical in 24-0 road victory over Great Oak

    By  | preps@pe.com | Press-Enterprise

    PUBLISHED: September 21, 2018 at 11:51 pm | UPDATED: September 21, 2018 at 11:51 pm

TEMECULA — San Juan Hills’ first half against Great Oak was inconsistent and mistake-filled. Head coach Rob Frith challenged his offensive line in a spirited halftime discussion.

    Challenge accepted.

The Stallions got physical in the second half, breaking down the smaller Wolfpack line, and the result was a 24-0 win for the visitors.

Senior running back Chase Monarch carried the ball 20 times for 153 yards and a touchdown while senior fullback Steven Margaretis chipped in with 62 yards on 13 carries and a score as the offensive line took the halftime challenge and ran with it.

“We said we’re done being pretty, we’re done being cute, we’re going to go old school and get after it,” Frith said. “Just win the battle up front. Win the individual battle. Give the running back a crease and let him do his thing.”

While the running game for San Juan Hills (3-3) came alive in the second half, the Stallions defense came to play all night. They held Great Oak (1-4) to 50 yards from scrimmage and only four first downs. It’s hard to move the ball when you’ve started five different offensive lines in five games as the Wolfpack has done.

“We have some young guys who are playing hard and some seniors who have stepped up their leadership,” Great Oak head coach Robbie Robinson said. “We’re a work in progress. Hopefully this got us ready for league next week.”

Junior running back James Mullen II carried the load offensively for the Wolfpack as he turned 13 carries into 48 yards.

Perhaps the Stallions’ most impressive drive didn’t even net points. Pinned at their own 4-yard line in their first drive of the second half, they ran off a 15-play drive that ended on Great Oak’s 2-yard line. Monarch ran eight times for 74 yards on the drive.

“That’s all integrity,” Monarch said. “We wanted it more than they wanted it and it showed. This game we went 100 percent and realized our full potential.”

That drive stalled but it quickly turned into a safety as the ball was snapped over the Great Oak punter’s head four plays later.

“We realized we were tiring them out,” Margaretis said. “We just needed to pull it together and close it out and we did that.”

The visitors closed out the scoring when Jake Hall intercepted Gavin Vida’s pass and returned it 37 yards for a pick six on a 4th-and 4 play.

The Wolfpack defense did its part to stay in the game as Evan Etheridge and Daniel Ganino (sack) recorded key interceptions to halt San Juan Hills drives. Senior linebacker Preston Toner chipped in with four tackles for loss.

“Our defense is playing great,” Robinson said. “We were just on the field for too long. When you’re undersized like we were against them, you’re on the field for probably 80-90 plays and you wear down.”

Fryer on football: Surprised by upsets in Orange County football? Don’t be

    Saturday, September 15, 2018

By Steve Fryer, Orange County Register

It is a familiar question after a night like Friday night.

    “Are you surprised they won?”

    Nope. Never surprised.

It’s Orange County high school football. Anything can happen and usually does.

San Juan Hills beat Tesoro 7-6. San Juan Hills (2-3) is No. 16 in the Orange County top 25. Previously undefeated Tesoro (4-1) is No. 8 in the county rankings.

Villa Park beat Servite 28-14. First off, you don’t need to know rankings to understand that was an upset – a public-school team defeated a Trinity League team. That’s like Fresno State beating USC (that happened at the Freedom Bowl … the what? Google that one, friends.)

For the record, Villa Park (3-1) is No. 11 in the county top 25. Previously undefeated Servite (3-1) is No. 6 in O.C. and No. 13 in the CalHiSports.com state rankings.

El Dorado defeated El Modena 29-27. El Modena is No. 15 in the county and was 3-0 going into this week. El Dorado (2-2) is not in the top 25, and why would the Golden Hawks be there? They lost to No. 21 El Toro 26-0 and to No. 23 Valencia 31-3.

You never know what you’re going to get in high school football. I always visit with coaches before a game, to check on injuries and find out what else is happening in their programs.

I’ll ask, “Did your team have a good week of practice?” And a coach will answer, “I don’t know. Ask me in two hours!”

That’s what makes Orange County high school football so fun. Maybe not fun for the coaches’ stomachs, but fun for the rest of us.

Orange County football will have more upsets next week, and the week after next and during the rest of the season.

Will I be surprised? Nope. And neither should you.

    SWISS ARMY KNIFE

That’s Joey Hobert of San Juan Hills.

Hobert plays receiver and defensive back, punts and kicks and returns kickoffs and punts. In the Stallions’ 7-6 win Friday over Tesoro, Hobert, son of former University of Washington and NFL quarterback Billy Joe Hobert, scored the Stallions’ touchdown on a 2-yard shovel pass play and kicked the extra point to provide the winning margin.

All night Hobert showed his importance to the Stallions. That was clearly exhibited on a sequence of plays in the second quarter.

With Tesoro looking at second-and-7 at the San Juan Hills 18-yard line, Hobert sprinted 15 yards, swerving through blockers to tackle a Tesoro ball carrier for no gain. After the Titans failed to get a first down on the next play they attempted a 37-yard field goal that was blocked by Hobert. On San Juan Hills’ first offensive play after that, Hobert made a key block that sprung Stallions running back Chase Monarch for a 12-yard gain and a first down.

“He’s phenomenal,” San Juan Hills coach Robert Frith said of Hobert. “As good a player he is, he’s an even better kid.”

    HE WAS READY

San Juan Hills, having been shut out in the first half Friday, turned to sophomore Hudson Jones to play quarterback in the second half.

“You’re looking for a spark there,” Frith said. “Give the sophomore a chance and see what he can do for us.”

Like Hobert, Jones has some good football DNA. His older brother, Cooper Jones, was Sea View League offensive player of the year in 2017 as the quarterback at El Toro.

Hudson Jones fumbled his first snap. The ball was recovered by San Juan Hills.

“I was nervous on the first play,” Jones said. “But I settled down after that.”

Yes, he did. Jones completed his first two passes, for 35 and 33 yards, and finished 9 of 12 for 150 yards.

Jones had only three varsity snaps before Friday. He got plenty of practice time with the starting unit the past few days.

“We all trusted him throughout the week,” Hobert said. Jones earned that trust and maybe the San Juan Hills starting quarterback role the rest of the season and beyond.

Cade Albright Ranked Top Defensive Lineman in Orange County So Far in 2018

    Monday, September 10, 2018

Dan Albano of the Orange County Register has ranked Stallions senior defensive end Cade Albright as the #1 defensive lineman in Orange County so far in 2018.

"Albright’s terrorizing, season-opening effort against Orange Lutheran has been arguably the best single-game performance by a county defensive lineman. Mater Dei’s Bru McCoy might get to the quarterback faster, but Albright is a strong second. He already has five sacks in three games."

    Game Overview - Edison Chargers

The Stallions return home to the Badlands with a 1-2 record following a disappointing loss against South Hills and a strong win against Canyon, which came on the heels of a hard-fought battle versus Orange Lutheran, who entered the season opener ranked #6 nationally.  The Stallions have been led by all-around threat Joey Hobert, who has produced offensively, defensively, and on special teams, where he has handled punting and place kicking duties while providing a dynamic spark returning punts and kick-offs.  Offensively, the Stallions continue to confuse opponents with a number of offensive looks that highlight their athleticism behind a platoon of running backs paced by Chase Monarch, Austin Hogan, and Stephen Margaretis.  On the defensive side of the ball, the Stallions are led by Darius Jackson, Case Ostrom, and Cade Albright.  First-year Stallions head coach Rob Frith credits much of his team’s success thus far to the meticulous game planning of defensive coordinator Pete Silvey, “I think it starts with a good game plan.” Frith said of the defense. “I think Pete Silvey does a great job coordinating a great game plan each week. It takes place during the week in practice, guys buying in and working hard, and execution on Friday nights.”

Lining up against the Stallions are an Edison Chargers team that opened the season with losses to Oaks Christian and Tesoro, before notching a decisive 51-15 win against common opponent Canyon to snap what had been their worst season start since 2005.  The Jeff Grady-coached Chargers come into Stallion Stadium on the backs of defensive standouts Jovanni Page and Luke Hoggard, while being led offensively by quarterback Patrick Angelovic and wideout Cole Koffler, who set an Edison school record with 265 receiving yards and three touchdowns on nine catches in the Canyon game.

Look for this game to be a defensive battle, with the edge going to the Stallions based on their ability to create big plays on special teams.

San Juan Hills Dominates on Defense, Ground to Defeat Canyon as QB Competition Plays Out

By Zach Cavanagh | Capistrano Dispatch

    PUBLISHED: August 24, 2018

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO – There were two contests on the field at San Juan Hills High School on Friday night.

First was the football game itself. San Juan Hills took care of its business and dominated Canyon, 34-0. The Stallions controlled the line of scrimmage to hold Canyon to just 53 yards of offense through three quarters, rush for a combined 289 yards and give Coach Rob Frith his first win at San Juan Hills.

“It feels good to win,” Frith said. “For me, it’s not about my first win. It’s about the kids and them being successful and feeling good. When you’re able to run the ball and play good defense, it’s a recipe for success.”

Senior Chase Monarch ran for 118 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries. Junior Joey Hobert did a little of everything with an interception, touchdown reception, 75-yard punt return touchdown and two punts inside the Canyon five-yard line.

Canyon (0-2) passed for negative yardage through three quarters as the Stallions (1-1) defensive line swarmed and conquered the Comanches.

“I think it starts with a good game plan,” Frith said of the defense. “I think Pete Silvey does a great job coordinating a great game plan each week. It takes place during the week in practice, guys buying in and working hard, and execution on Friday nights.”

The second contest was under center as San Juan Hills used their second game as a quarterback competition. Returning junior quarterback Bryce Crider and transfer junior quarterback Jake Carreon alternated quarters at the helm of the offense.

The 6-foot-5 Crider played in the first and third quarter, completed 8 of 12 passes for 107 yards, three touchdowns and an interception and rushed for 26 yards on two carries.

The 5-foot-11 Carreon played the second and fourth quarters and completed 5 of 10 passes for 40 yards and took two sacks and a fumble for minus-23 yards rushing.

Because of the San Juan Hills dominance and the proficient running game, each quarterback’s production was helped – and hindered as Carreon took the fourth quarter reps while the Stallions ran down the game clock.

While Friday was an opportunity to evaluate both quarterbacks to decide on a starter before a tough stretch of schedule, Frith will need an extra day in the office to make a firm decision.

“You can look at production, but at the same time, you’ve got to look at film,” Frith said. “For me, you get a sense for what’s going on by just being here, but to really understand what’s going on, you need to get in and watch film. You need to look at read progressions, make sure guys are making good decisions with the football. Those are the things that you can’t measure just out here on a Friday night. You need to sit down and be diligent about watching them on film and grading them.”

San Juan Hills got off to a quick, if a little sloppy, start.

Crider took a keeper run on the game’s opening play for 30 yards, but a holding penalty negated it to a 19-yard run. The next snap went over Crider’s head where Chase Monarch grabbed it and ran 60 yards to the end zone. However, another holding penalty negated the score and kept it at a 44-yard run.

The Stallions worked quickly and eventually did finish the opening drive in the end zone as Crider hit Brigham Hill on a 19-yard touchdown, 7-0.

At the end of Canyon’s next drive, Joey Hobert returned a punt 75 yards for the score and a 14-0 lead. That play initially looked like another negated score as a flag was thrown for running into the punter, but the flag was waved off to up hold Hobert’s return.

“I trusted the scheme,” Hobert said of the punt return. “Blocks were insane. On one of them, my teammate got absolutely destroy just so I could get through. And I appreciate that greatly. Just taking it back was fun, making moves, having my teammates beside me. Even when I scored, they were right there.”

Canyon’s next drive ended in more San Juan Hills controversy as Nic Mendiola blocked the Canyon punt and picked it up for the score. However, another holding penalty cancelled out another San Juan Hills core.

Later in the first quarter, the teams each traded an interception deep in Canyon territory. After Hobert pulled in the interception for San Juan Hills, Crider immediately found Jaxon Lewis in the left corner for a 25-yard touchdown and the 21-point lead.

Carreon took over in the second quarter but couldn’t find a footing in the offense. Austin Hogan carried the Stallions down the field with three straight runs for first downs. San Juan Hills got to the Canyon 8-yard line, but the Stallions sputtered. The drive ended with a missed field goal.

In the third quarter, Crider hit Hobert up the San Juan Hills sideline for a 37-yard touchdown and the 28-0 lead.

The fourth quarter was the running backs’ domain as Monarch added the game’s exclamation point with a three-yard touchdown run early in the quarter.

Canyon missed a 30-yard field goal attempt to keep the game scoreless.

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO – Orange Lutheran coach JP Presley did not envision his team’s season getting off to such a rocky start.

“Obviously you always have a different story in your mind of what your first game is going to look like,” Presley said.

The second-ranked Lancers were able to grind out a 27-7 victory over No. 18 San Juan Hills on Friday night, but it was not easy.

Presley was brutally honest about his team’s performance, but also gave credit to the Stallions for making things difficult.

“We knew coming in here that we were going to be challenged, period, mentally, physically, across the board,” he said. “I was proud of my defense but, again, we have to continue to build resiliency.”

The defense for the Stallions (0-1) rose to the occasion and first-year Coach Rob Frith was proud of the effort his team gave. They were able force a turnover and sack Lancers quarterback Ryan Hilinski on the first two drives and kept a potent offense off the scoreboard for nearly 20 minutes.

“Our defensive coordinator Pete Silvey orchestrated an unbelievable effort tonight from our guys on the defensive side of the football,” Frith said. “All we asked our guys to do was play hard for 48 minutes, not cave in and just go toe-to-toe.

“These guys can say they went toe-to-toe with the No. 6 team in the country.”

After an opening quarter littered with overthrown balls, dropped passes and penalties, Orange Lutheran (1-0) used an alert defense for a second-quarter spark.

Ethan Rae promptly jumped on a loose ball that slipped from the hand of San Juan Hills quarterback Bryce Crider as he cocked back to throw. Rae’s recovery set up an eight-play scoring drive capped by a 17-yard TD catch by Kyle Ford.

Hilinski, who finished with 295 yards and three touchdown passes, and Ford got into a groove in the second quarter. The duo connected six times for 93 yards after failing to convert on three targets in the first quarter.

Hilinski also found Logan Loya and Michael Puskas for scoring tosses of 12 and 13 yards, while Thomas Huff III added a 14-yard TD run to put the game away.
