Hobert shines in win over Edison

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO – It is good to have Joey Hobert on your team.

Hobert had two interceptions, ran for 58 yards on a fake punt to set up a touchdown, had 148 receiving yards, including a 69-yard touchdown reception, as he led San Juan Hills to a 22-15 win over Edison in a CIF-Southern Section Division 2 first-round playoff game Friday at San Juan Hills High.

The Stallions (8-3) play second-seeded Calabasas in the second round Friday at San Juan Hills. San Juan Hills has won seven in a row since its last loss, 33-14 to Edison on Sept. 7.

Hobert, a junior who plays receiver and safety, punts, kicks off and returns punts and kickoffs, said the Stallions are a better and different team than the one that lost to the Chargers two months ago.

“Our offense had some troubles then,” said Hobert, son of former University of Washington and NFL quarterback Billy Joe Hobert. “We have a whole new offense going. We’re a hardcore running team now and our defense like always was lockdown.”

Chase Monarch rushed for 81 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries for the Stallions.

Hobert rushed for 146 yards on four carries, including a 75-yard run that set up a touchdown. He also had a spectacular, leaping breakup on a long pass.

San Juan Hills defensive end Cade Albright had three sacks.

Edison, which finished third in the Sunset League, concluded the season 5-6.

San Juan Hills had a 9-7 lead at halftime. The Stallions stretched the lead to 15-7 on a 69-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Hudson Jones to Hobert, who hauled in the ball at the Edison 34-yard line and skipped through a tackle before taking off for the end zone. The extra-point kick was blocked by Edison’s Trent Fletcher, leaving San Juan Hills with a 15-7 advantage.

Edison tied it on a 29-yard touchdown pass from sophomore quarterback Braeden Boyles to Ryan Rivutso and a two-point conversion pass from running back Mike Walters to Cameron Eden to make it 15-15.

Hobert took a shovel pass in the backfield for a 75-yard gain that set up Monarch’s 5-yard run late in the third quarter to provide the winning points 22-15. Hobert on the shovel pass appeared to be snared in the backfield but wiggled his way through for the long gain.

In the first quarter Edison took a 7-0 lead on an 54-yard interception return by Sam Rovano.  Rovano cut into the passing lane and at the Edison 46-yard line caught San Juan Hills quarterback Hudson Jones’ pass in stride. Rovano sprinted unchallenged down the left sideline, the Edison sideline, for a 54-yard touchdown and a 7-0 Chargers lead with 2:30 left in the first quarter.

San Juan Hills scored on an 8-yard touchdown run Monarch early in the second quarter. That was set up by a fake punt.

Later in the quarter Hobert in punt formation took the snap then cut right and ran 58 yards to the Edison 8-yard line. Monarch took it in from there. The extra-point kick missed, leaving Edison with a 7-6 lead.

San Juan Hills took a 9-7 lead on a 26-yard field goal by Tony Wang.
