Editor’s note: The Orange County Register is having the area’s spring sports coaches take part in a Q&A about the 2020 season that was cut short by the coronavirus crisis.

Bret LeVier, San Juan Hills baseball

Q: How are you adapting to being home every day during the spring?

A: I’m adapting pretty well I think. I think the game of baseball teaches us how to handle adversity, and the game of baseball has been teaching me for years how to handle things out of my control.

I am also enjoying the opportunity to spend time with my wife and daughters. This time of year is when things are typically very busy, and getting this time at home has been enjoyable.

Q: As a coach, what do you miss most about your “normal routine” (pre-coronavirus)?

A: I miss the people. I miss getting to see my players in the morning or during breaks throughout the day as they come in my classroom to play ping pong, mini basketball or just hang out with each other.

I also miss the amazing staff at San Juan Hills and getting to see the coaches, teachers, administrators’ smiling faces on a daily basis.

Q: When you think about your team these days, what stands out the most?

A: How much fun they were having. They worked extremely hard this past year, and getting to watch them enjoy some of the fruits of the labor was really enjoyable. They were having so much fun creating an environment that was fun to be around.

Q: As a coach, what has been the worst moment for you this spring and why?

A: Having to tell my seniors that their senior season was over through video chat. I felt extremely bad for them, and having to break that news to them not being face to face was very difficult.

When breaking bad news like that you naturally just want to hug them and tell them how you feel face to face.

Q: And what has been the best moment for you this spring and why?

A: The best moment was watching our team come together. The chemistry that this team had created was something special. They truly enjoyed being around each other and were having so much fun through the 10 games we got to play this spring.

Q: If you could play one game tomorrow, what would that look like? (Opponent? Venue? The circumstances?)

A: That’s a good question. I guess my mind immediately goes towards trying to overcome our last loss. So, the opponent would be Aliso Niguel, we would be playing at their place, and this game would determine who wins the Sea View League championship.

Q: What do you want your players to learn from all of this?

A: I think we talk so often about how to handle certain situations that are out of our control, and how to overcome adversity.

This is one of the most devastating things that these players have had to deal with up to this point. I hope they take away how they have felt and how they eventually are going to be able to overcome this situation and be better for it afterwards.

Q: For fun, which player(s) on your team made you laugh the most?

A: I think this year might be the year I have laughed the most, so that’s tough to narrow it down. This group was so much fun to be around.

I’m going to miss the senior class, who all had their own way of bringing laughter to our group.

We had John Shukur trash talking in BP, Ryan Forbes’ and Isaiah Matthews’ hilarious pottery class designs, Matt Payne’s smart aleck remarks, Cole Quillin’s cheesecake, Pope Specials, Riley Johnson’s pregame meals, Cole Bourne’s “hurry, you’re late”, and George’s laugh!

Q: For fun, who on your team do you take deep and who do you strike out if you had a chance?

A: Good question. The easy answer is everyone! I’m taking deep all of our pitchers and striking out any and all of them too!

But I’m thinking I would most enjoy taking deep senior RHP Ethan Pope, and really enjoy striking out junior SS William Gleed.

Q: For fun, what song do you play on the bus for the final bus ride home?

A: “Let’s Get Weird.”
