LOS ANGELES — In the biggest game in the history of its football program, San Juan Hills rode the legs of running back Austin Hogan and the relentless play of Joey Hobert to a CIF Southern Section championship.

San Juan Hills (11-3) held on to defeat host Loyola 21-15 in the CIF-SS Division 4 championship game Saturday night. It is the first CIF-SS title for the program.

“This is all about our senior class,” San Juan Hills coach Robert Frith said. “These guys are writing their legacy, and I am beyond proud of them. They had tremendous leaders and chemistry, and I am so proud of these guys.”

It was evident from the start of the game that the offensive game plan for the Stallions (11-3) centered around the 6-foot-1, 195-pound Hogan. The senior carried the ball 29 times for 133 yards and scored a touchdown.

Whenever the Stallions needed a first down or a big play, Hogan’s name was called.

“I can’t believe this is happening. All the hard work that led to this and it feels good,” Hogan said. “I couldn’t have done it without the offensive line. They are my dogs, and I love all of them.”

It was Hogan who capped the Stallions’ first offensive drive by scoring on an 8-yard run with 1:55 left in the first quarter. The drive began on their 1-yard line.

Hobert took advantage of the game’s first turnover when he recovered a Loyola fumble and scampered 25 yards into the end zone for a touchdown and a 14-0 lead.

Hobert scored his second touchdown of the game late in the third quarter when he took a direct snap and ran into the end zone from 5 yards out to increase the Stallions’ lead to 21-0.

“We knew that this was going to be a senior-led team,” Hobert said. “Ever since we lost our playoff game to Calabasas last year, we knew that we were destined to do something great with this team. We’re not done yet; we’re going to keep going during the state playoffs.”

The CIF Southern California Regional pairings will be announced Sunday.

Loyola (6-7) mounted a rally in the fourth quarter as quarterback Brayden Zermano connected with Michael Jones on a 17-yard touchdown pass with 10:14 left that trimmed San Juan Hills’ lead to 21-12.

On the ensuing kickoff, Loyola successful executed an onside kick, which resulted in Diego Burgos connecting on a 34-yard field goal that cut the Stallions’ lead to 21-15.

Loyola had a final chance to win the game, but Chase Schmidt intercepted Zermano’s pass in the end zone to cement San Juan Hills’ historic victory.

“We have three keys to our success,” Frith said. “You must have a championship defense. We also had to win the hidden yardage, and we had to control the ball offensively. We did all three of those (tonight).”
