Tuesday was a big day for San Juan Capistrano (Calif.) San Juan Hills defensive lineman Tyler Wegis who landed three new scholarship offers.

If you’re looking for a long, athletic rush end who can get after the quarterback, Wegis could be your guy. The defensive end is having a big senior year and schools are starting to take notice.

Through seven games, the athlete has racked up 50 tackles including an amazing 20 for loss, 15 quarterback hurries and six and half sacks.  Wegis had 19 tackles for loss and six and a half sacks his entire junior season.

Regis shows up really well on film and flashes off the edge. He shows a motor, is relentless in how he pursues the football and closes very well.

He’s a naturally strong kid who will routinely stand up an opposing tackle, disengages and can run down plays from behind. He’s strong at the point of attack as well and plays with a nice physical edge in his game. As he  continues to fill out and gains strength, his game will take off to another level.

On the recruiting front, Wegis pulled in scholarship offers from Utah, Virginia and Oregon State on Tuesday to join an earlier offer from San Diego. UCLA also visited the school to see him workout in the morning and then was back at practice later in the day. The Bruins signed offensive lineman Sean Rhyan out of San Juan Hills a year ago.

Wegis' sudden rise reminds us of Stallions defensive end Cade Albright from a year ago who saw his recruitment heat up before signing with BYU. San Juan Hills does a nice job developing players and Wegis is a prospect who flashes a very nice upside.

“He’s very similar to Cade and the thing about Wegis is he just turned 17, he’s young for his  grade,” Stallions defensive coordinator Pete Silvey said. “He’s adding size and strength even during the course of the season and is getting bigger and stronger.

“He also has some nasty to him. He finishes every tackle with authority. He uses his hands really well, great strike and always wins at the point of attack, he’s a stud.”

Wegis is a high end academic kid as well and will have Ivy League options.

“He’s a 30 ACT kid so the Ivy’s are on him,” Silvey said. “He visited Stanford and Cal over the summer and did the Satellite Camps at APU and Redlands.

“San Diego and UC Davis were on him early but a lot of schools wanted to see how big he could get and wanted to see some senior tape, see him against a school like Orange Lutheran. Utah was at our game Friday and they just offered so hopefully things continue to pick up for him. He's a tough kid for sure and can definitely help a team looking to upgrade in that department."
