San Juan Capistrano (Calif.) San Juan Hills wide out Joey Hobert showed why he’s among the most under-rated prospects out West after a strong opening game performance.

Although they came up a little short in a tough 27-21 loss against Orange Lutheran (Calif.), Hobert was the best player on the field and it may not have been close. The Washington State commit never left the field and was dominant in all three phases of the game.

“He could be the best athlete in Orange County,” Orange Lutheran assistant coach Mike Crawford said. “The kid is special, they don’t make them like that any more. His conditioning must be insane because he never takes a play off. Even on defense, he's not just sitting back there, he's coming downhill and his motor never stops. He's an old school player and absolute stud.

“The kid never left the field, I repeat, he never left the field. He plays offense, defense and special teams. He’s a great receiver and lays the hat on defense too. He’s not afraid to come up and smack somebody and he was super respectful and humble after the game as well. There isn’t a better all around player in Orange County. I’ve seen a lot of kids live and I haven’t seen many like him before.”

Hobert finished the night with 10 catches for 223 yards and three touchdowns to go with 12 tackles from his safety position. He was one of our favorite players over the spring and summer and our top performer at the Under Armour All-American Camp.

He shows both short area quickness and the top end speed to run past a defense. He’s an explosive and precise route runner who can run after the catch and has pure hands.

His toughness and compete level shows up on defense as well. He’ll come downhill and make a big hit in the backfield and shows tremendous range in pass coverage. As a junior, Hobert caught 46 balls for 643 yards and nine touchdown and it won't surprise us at all if he doubles those numbers this season.

Hobert has the talent to play for any program out West and was an absolute steal for Washington State. He's a great fit in the Cougars offense and should be a lot of fun to watch in Mike Leach's system.
